Students explored how animals use their senses to survive — specifically how taste can help butterflies avoid being eaten by birds.
We started by observing two mystery “butterflies” (Cup A & Cup B) and recording our observations in a Venn Diagram. Students compared what was the same and different before tasting each one.
Then came the fun part… taste testing!
• Butterfly A represented the Viceroy butterfly — sweet and tasty, making it a favorite snack for birds.
• Butterfly B represented the Monarch butterfly — not so sweet! Monarchs taste bad and can make birds sick (without harming them), so birds learn to avoid them.
Students discovered that Viceroy butterflies survive by looking almost identical to Monarchs — an amazing adaptation called mimicry!
To wrap it up, students became “birds” and had to decide which new mystery cup (C or D) they would eat based on their experience. They recorded their thinking and used evidence from their senses to justify their choice.
Hands-on learning + critical thinking + a little bravery with taste testing = a science lesson they won’t forget! 🧠✨
